Ingredients

For the Meatballs:
  • 1 lb ground beef or mix of beef and pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 small onion finely minced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
For the Maple Glaze:
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes optional

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground meat, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  3. Shape mixture into small meatballs (about 1–1.5 inches in diameter) and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until cooked through and golden brown.
  5. While meatballs cook, make the glaze: in a saucepan, whisk together maple syrup, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, mustard, and red pepper flakes. Simmer over medium heat for 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Add cooked meatballs to the saucepan and toss until evenly coated.
  7. Garnish with chopped parsley or chives and serve warm.

Notes

  • These can be made ahead and reheated in a slow cooker with extra glaze for parties.
  • For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey or chicken.
  • Serve with rice, noodles, or toothpicks as an appetizer.
