Homemade Fig Preserves Recipe: A Sweet Taste of Simplicity

Whether you spread it on toast, pair it with cheese, or swirl it into yogurt, fig preserves elevate just about anything they touch.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 lbs fresh figs ripe but firm
  • cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Optional: 1 cinnamon stick or splash of vanilla extract

Method
 

Clean & Prep
  1. Rinse figs, remove stems.
  2. Halve large figs; leave small ones whole.
Combine
  1. In a large pot, add figs, sugar, water, lemon juice, and zest.
  2. Optional: add cinnamon stick for warm spice.
Simmer
  1. Bring to gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  2. Reduce heat; cook uncovered 45–60 minutes until soft, glossy, and thickened.
Jar & Store
  1. Remove cinnamon stick (if used).
  2. Spoon hot preserves into sterilized jars, seal, and cool.
  3. Store in fridge up to 1 month or process in water bath for longer shelf life.
