Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb dried navy beans or great northern beans
  • 1 ham bone with meat or 2 cups diced ham
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 carrots sliced
  • 2 celery stalks sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth or water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Method
 

  1. Rinse beans and soak overnight (optional but recommended). Drain before using.
  2. Place beans, ham bone (or diced ham), onion, carrots, celery, garlic, bay leaf, and broth into the crockpot.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 8–10 hours or high for 4–6 hours, until beans are tender.
  4. Remove ham bone, shred any meat, and return it to the crockpot.
  5. Season with salt, pepper, and additional spices if desired.
  6. Serve warm with cornbread or crusty bread.
